PubCon Vegas Brings PageRank Update

It seems when there is a big SEO conference with Google attending a Pagerank update happens. This time is no exception, Pagerank “just happened” to be updated on the eve of Google’s anti-link guru’s M.C.’s Keynote speech today at the Las Vegas SEO PubCon (Publishers Conference). The last Pagerank update was only 3 months ago, so I a fairly sure the timing is no coincidence.

Google’s theme at these conferences is often paid links are bad and only get natural links with good content. They then stir up the pot a bit with a PR update to get link buying crowd a bit paranoid. I’ve been attending SEO conferences for 10 years and it’s the same cycle every time – link buying and selling tends to slow down for a bit, then people realize they need links to rank and link buying returns back to normal after a month or so, until the next conference – Rinse and repeat.

Anyone involved with paid links needs to realize is that it is in Google’s interest to scare website owners away from buying links. Text links are the single most important factor in where sites rank. Yes, there are hundreds of factors related to where you rank, but nothing moves a site to the top of the rankings like having quality backlinks. I am all for natural links, but unless you have the type of site people love linking to, you are going to need a few paid links mixed in to compete.
