J.C. Penny Shits Gold with Link Buying Strategy

By now most people with any interest in SEO or Buying and Selling links know about the J.C. Penny link buying news. That a 100 year old company with a huge advertising budget started to buy links from the web’s shadiest link brokerage, TNX, (cough..my warning about TNX 3 years ago can be found here) shows how messed up having one search engine controlling almost all e-commerce and the dire need for real search competition.

What is most revealing is how nicely J.C. Penny’s crap link buying strategy worked for them until the N.Y. Times finally called them out and forced Google’s hand. Did Google look the other way when one of their huge advertisers was gaming their natural search results? My thought is probably not, Google truly has a hard time algorithmically identifying even the crappiest paid links when placed for a major website that already has a huge backlink profile.

After all the propaganda during the last 5 years spewed by Google telling honest webmasters that only relevant natural links will help their search results, J.C. Penny’s plethora of paid crap off topic links says otherwise. Sure J.C. Penny suffered public humiliation, but even bad press is good press. Also, how hip is it that stodgy old J.C. Penny went ghetto SEO? On top of everything they received months and months of top rankings for BIG MONEY keyword phrases straight through the holidays making them millions in additional revenue. They stomped on many timid little guys that towed the Google corporate line. Now they can take that huge pile of cashed earned from buying a steaming pile of crap paid links and totally dominate Google’s paid search results for years to come.

Stubbornly, I still stick to my golden rule because one day Google will figure out how to identify an non-relevant crap paid links: If you buy links, buy only relevant links on real sites that exist for something other then text link ad sales.
