Newspaper Text Links

There was a time about 3 years ago when a newspaper text link ad on a site such as http://www.sfgate.com/ would help your link popularity, giving your website a quick boost in the SERPs. Pagerank passing on blocks of sponsored links at the newspaper websites has been stopped long ago, so unless you are hoping for click throughs you are most certainly wasting your money.
Still, newbies continue to buy newspaper website links in these giant sponsored link blocks thinking they will get link love, after a while, when they get no results and money runs low they stop renewing and another sucker takes their place.
The exception to the rule is getting a contextual HTML link in the middle of a newspaper website article. However, I suspect major website link seller sites like sfgate.com, even the contextual text links are blocked from passing value. Bottom line, forget the newspaper sites unless you can get a real story written about your site with a link back to your website. Use the money you save to buy links under the radar on < PR5 sites and contextual text links ads.
